Spotlight: NEW BOOK SERIES Developments in Integrated Environmental Assessment

The IDEA book series addresses the increasing importance for interdisciplinary systems research that relates to assessing policy and resource management options that could lead to improved sustainability outcomes. It aims to capture current trends in, and promote the advancement of: new intellectual tools and processes that integrate consideration of multiple issues, interest groups, disciplines and scales in addressing the wide-ranging impacts of controllable and uncontrollable drivers on socioeconomic, ecological, hydrological and institutional performance.

25th October 2006 Spotlight: special rates for iEMSs members for EM&S subscription
Also for 2007 Elsevier is offering a discount off the price of a subscription to Environmental Modelling & software. The cost for 12 hardcopy issues is 58 USD, while the hardcopy and online access comes at 70 USD. Please, fill in the attached form, and send it to Elsevier, if you want to take advantage of this offer.

25th July 2006 New President, new Board and Office elected.

The biennial general meeting was held during the iEMSs 2006 meeting in Burlington, VT, USA. A new President, Giorgio Guariso, was elected, and new fresh forces joined the iEMSs board of directors. Read the minutes of the 3rd BGM to get all updates. You can also browse a few photos of the award ceremony, which was held during the conference dinner.

iEMSs 2006
The Third Biennial Meeting of the iEMSs will be held in Burlington, Vermont, USA from the 9th to the 12th of July 2006. It incorporates the Summit on Environmental Modelling and Software, convened by Alexey Voinov. The summit is organised around themes and structured in workshops. The organisation itself is an ongoing participatory process and we have started a discussion space (the iEMSs 2006 blog) let all iEMSs members contribute to the structuring of this event.

7th November 2005 Conference announcement: 3rd International Symposium on Integrated Water Resources Management of the International Association of Hydrological Sciences
There is a worldwide increase in the dependence of the economic and social development on water resources and therefore mankind faces a threat, posed by water scarcity or water surplus. This symposium in Bochum, Germany, from 26 to 28 September 2006 addresses this evolution with the overarching theme Reducing the Vulnerability of Societies Against Water Related Risks at the Basin Scale. 27th September 2005 iEMSs Fellows announcement
It is a pleasure to announce the three iEMSs Fellows for 2005. The awardees are

They are to be congratulated for their service to the Society and their strength in research. We will present their awards and celebrate their achievement with them at the Summit next July in Vermont.

7th July 2005 Conference announcement: ICEM 2006
The International Conference on Ecological Modelling will be held in Yamaguchi, Japan, Japan, 28 August - 1 September, 2006. The theme of the conference will be 'Management of Sustainability and Ecological Modelling', More info available on the conference website linked above.

16 December 2004 Journal of Hydroinformatics
IWA Publishing offers iEMSs members a special subscription discount to the Journal of Hydroinformatics for 2005: Individual print copies £90.00 and Individual online copies £ 84.00. IWA provides an online form to order the subscription, but it does not give the opportunity to mention the 'iEMSs' discount code, so it is suggested to contact them by email at sales@portland-services.com.

23 September 2004 Conference announcement: ISESS 2005
The scope of the ISESS 2005 symposium is to present and discuss the progress and trends in Enviromatics, which is operationally defined as the application of information technology to environmental science, engineering, and management. The deadline for abstract submission is nigh: 5 November 2004. The conference will be held at the Hotel do Mar in Sesimbra, Portugal, from the 24th to the 27th of May 2005. 22 June 2004 iEMSs 2004 is over
We thank all participants who brought their scientific contributions and the organisers who made it happen. We are looking forward to meeting you in Burlington, Vermont, in 2006.

1 June 2004 The iEMSs Biennial Awards have been assigned

1 June 2004: Call for Nominations to the Board of iEMSs for the next two years
Nominations are open and they shouble be emailed to the Secretary of the society (secretary at iemss.org). It is proposed that the procedure for a member to be nominated to the Board of iEMSs be as follows:

  1. The member be nominated by another member for a position in response to the call for nominations before the (Biennial) General Meeting. This must be in writing to the Secretary of iEMSs, email being sufficient ; and
  2. The member must then be seconded in their nomination by another iEMSs member at the General Meeting.
Elections will then be held at the General Meeting. The election procedure is as follows:
  1. Positions for which there is only one nomination will automatically be conferred on the nominated party.
  2. Where two or more nominations have been made for a position, a vote will be taken by all members present at the General Meeting. The party or parties with the greatest number of votes will then be appointed.
The Biennial General Meeting will be held at the Osnabrueck Conference site on Monday June 14 at 1830 hours.

13 April 2003: Applications are open for the IA Summer School 2004 - Integrated Assessment for Environmental Management: Concepts, methods and tools for managing complex environmental problems. The Summer School, thought for young researchers, will be held in Osnabrück, Germany, from 25 - 31 July, 2004. The summer school sessions will be led by European scientists with expertise in various aspects of Integrated Assessment and environmental management. 22 March 2003: the call for the inaugural biennial round of iEMSs Biennial Medallists and iEMSs Early Career Researchers is open. Please, read the rules for designating a nominee. Nominations should reach the President, Anthony J Jakeman, or the Vice President and Chair of the Awards Committee, Michael McAleer. Nomination of a member, with a brief case for the nomination, must be made and seconded by iEMSs members and be sent with an accompanying CV. The CV will also serve as indication that the nominated person approves of their nomination.

6 October 2003: the Executive Board of the iEMSs congratulates the three elected iEMSs Fellows for 2003. They are Professor Achim Sydow (Natural Systems), Dr Dora Marinova (Socioeconomic Systems), Dr Andrea Rizzoli (Software Systems). The awards ceremony will be held during iEMSs 2004, where Professor Anthony J Jakeman, President of the iEMSs, will be given the inaugural iEMSs Fellow award.

10 September 2003: iEMSs, the University of Osnabrück and DBU, the German Environmental Foundation, are proud to introduce iEMSs 2004, the forthcoming biennial conference of the International Modelling and Software Society. The conference, convened by Professor Claudia Pahl-Wostl, will focus on the theme "Complexity and Integrated Resources Management".
There is a number of very interesting sessions that we hope will stimulate a broad participation to the conference, which will be held in Osnabrück from the 14th to the 17th of June 2004. Please, Submit an abstract before the end of October 2003, to express your interest.

26 March 2003: The University of Osnabrück (Germany) and the University of Twente (Netherlands) are pleased to announce a new joint Master's programme in Integrated Assessment. This MSc. degree programme in Integrated Assessment has been established in response to demand from scientists and practitioners for a comprehensive education programme in the field of Integrated Assessment. The two-year programme focuses on the analysis and management of human-environment-technology systems. The curriculum combines theory and methods, draws examples from case studies and applies these elements to practical projects.

5 March 2003: The rules governing the awards of iEMSs have been published. Awards consist of Fellowships, Biennial Medals, Early Career Excellence Prizes, Student prizes, and Student Commendations. In the forthcoming iEMSs 2004 conference, Biennial Medals and Early Career Excellence Prizes will be awarded for the first time.
