WORKSHOP W9 HAS BEEN CANCELLED !!!

Organisers

Huub Scholten, Wageningen University, The Netherlands (contact: Huub.Scholten@wur.nl)

Topics

The following aspects of multidisciplinary environmental science and projects can be addressed:

  • Theoretical concepts
  • Support software
  • A knowledge engineering approach
  • Workflows
  • Public participation
  • Applications
  • Integrated modelling, i.e. multidisciplinary, including socio-economics
  • DSS
  • Towards a shared methodology

Description

Due to a rising awareness of their complexity, environmental problems are more and more assessed in a multidisciplinary setting. Legal constraints, whether national, EU-originated or international, require a problem solving approach, in which all aspects are included and in which all legal entities affected by the problem or affected by its solutions, i.e. stakeholders, public, competent authorities, are involved in the process of problem solving.

A multidisciplinary approach provides a more comprehensive analysis and allows more complete options for solutions, but it also generates new problems caused by the different disciplinary backgrounds within a problem solving team and by the different levels of expertise, i.e. high for experts, medium for decision makers and low for most stakeholders and others affected.

Although at present these problems with multidisciplinarity are acknowledged, no shared view exists on how to handle them. Science and professional problem solving in all environmental domains (air, water, soil) should move from a monodisciplinary scientific method to a novel, effective, multidisciplinary method, in which all relevant scientific disciplines fit and cooperate and which transforms the multidisciplinarity problems into challenges for better environmental solutions.
