W5: Generic River Basin Water Management Models

Goals

This workshop reviews and evaluates the various features of five or more commonly used river basin simulation programs that have been incorporated into interactive menu-driven graphics-based interfaces. These so called river basin decision support systems include MIKE BASIN from Danish Hydraulics Institute, MODSIM from Colorado State University in the US, RIBASIM from Delft Hydraulics in the Netherlands, WBalMo from WASY in Germany, and WEAP from the Tellus Institute in Boston, Massachusetts in the US. Of interest will be the identification of both the strengths and limitations of the various models and their interfaces, and the types of problems and issues each of the DSSs is able to analyze and that has been addressed in actual applications. For example, how effective have these generic DSSs facilitated shared vision modeling exercises with interested stakeholders?

We are also interested in the experiences of everyone attending the workshop in developing and using river basin optimization/simulation models. We expect one outcome of this workshop will be a description of research needs and challenges facing all of us as we develop improved systems for analyzing the increasingly complex water resouces and related environmental and ecological issues many river basin managers will face in the future.
